Course Description:

"Fun with Science"  -aka Chemistry  :)
This course is a 10th grade or higher survey course designed to give a comprehensive
introduction to the vast subject of chemistry and to prepare your child for a college level course.

We will cover significant figures, units, classifiction, the mole concept, stoichiometry,
thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions,
solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structure, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium.

It is taught from a Christian (Biblical worldview) perspective.

Labs will be covered periodically to demonstrate the various concepts taught in the text.

Class Time:

  • Class time for Chemistry will consist of a mixture of lecture, problem solving, and labs.
  • It is important that students come to class prepared to discuss the reading.
  • I will use PowerPoints for many lectures, so students will be expected to take notes.
  • Quizzes will be given in class from time to time to test specific skills.
  • We will complete 10 - 14 labs throughout the year.
  • On lab days students are expected to follow instructions precisely in order to maintain safety.

Homework Requirements:

  • Homework consists of reading the text prior to class each week and will normally include text
review questions or worksheet calculations that support the text.
  • Homework assignments will be reviewed in class for accuracy.
  • Students can expect 2 - 4 hours per week of homework.
  • Some concepts that are more difficult will take more practice at home.

  • Tests and quizzes will be given in class.

  • 40%  homework
  • 25%  quizzes
  • 20%  tests
  • 15%  labs

  • PLEASE remember to check your child's grade on Schoology regularly.
This is a wonderful tool to catch problems before they have a significant effect on his or her grade.

Specific Requirements:

  • Some students may need to use Khan Academy or other sites to reinforce a concept.
  • I highly encourage students to make use of available resources in order to succeed.
  • All calculations must show your WORK.
I need to see units and equations in order to grade calculations.
  • Students are expected to bring a calculator to class.

  • textbook
  • binder w. 8 dividers
  • loose-leaf college-ruled paper
  • 3-ring binder zip-up supply holder
  • scientific calculator with parenthesis capability (such as TI- 30X IIS)   -approximately $15
