Course Time:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays
    Please note, this class meets twice per week.



Prerequisites:

  • Students need to have completed Middle School Math 6/7
    or an equivalent.  
  • Students scoring a B or better in a prerequisite class taken at WHCT
    are not required to take a placement test for the next level class.
  • All other students must pass a short placement test prior to registration.



Course Considerations:

  • This course is typically recommended for our 8th grade students.
  • 7th grade students that are on an accelerated math track and meet the
    Prerequisite Requirements are also welcome in this course.
  • TN schools (umbrella schools/homeschoolers included) require math all four years of high school.
    Please carefully consider your student's God-given bent and personality as you plan his/her math track.

Course Description:

Prealgebra is an introduction to Algebra.
It covers topics such as whole numbers, integers, solving equations and problem solving, fractions, mixed numbers,
decimals, ratios, proportion, percent, graphing, geometry and measurement, exponents, and polynomials.  





Class Time:

  • Go over previous homework.
  • Learn new concepts.
  • Fill-in-the-blank notes.
  • Practice and take questions.  




Homework Requirements:

  • Fill in definitions and rules and procedures for the fill-in-the-blank notes to follow along with the lecture in class.
  • There will be two Math XL assignments per week (normally Mondays and Wednesdays).
  • Students are expected to check answers to odd-numbered problems at home.
  • Questions regarding even-numbered problems are addressed at the beginning of class.




Testing:

  • Tests will be administered in-class.




Grading:

  • Quarter Grades:

    • 40%  homework and practice tests
    • 40%  tests
    • 20%  math XL

  • First Semester Grades:

    • 45%  1st quarter grade
    • 45%  2nd quarter grade
    • 10%  midterm

  • Second Semester Grades:

    • 45%  3rd quarter grade
    • 45%  4th quarter grade
    • 10%  final
