Course Prerequisites:

This course is typically a 6th-7th grade course.
Students should have mastered their addition and multiplication facts and have
a solid foundation in the four basic operations, not just with large-digit numbers,
but also with fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers.
This course will build on an existing foundation in these areas.

Mathematics Applications and Concepts, Course 2, Student Edition

Course Description:
Middle School Math introduces the algebraic concepts of variables, integers,
expressions, solving simple and two-step equations, and the geometric concepts
of similar figures, proportions, graphing, area, volume, and the Pythagorean Theorem.

The course also expands on the student’s knowledge of statistics, fractions, decimals,
and percents.

Students will be prepared to enter a Pre-Algebra course the following year.

Course Class Time:

Class time begins with a review worksheet or drill.
Students then turn in their homework and ask a few questions if needed.
The bulk of the class is spent learning new concepts, first with a brief teaching
time and then with students working problems in their skills workbook.

Course Homework Requirements:

Reading the lesson, completing problems from the book,
and working problems online.
There is a chapter test once every 3-4 weeks.
Students can expect 4-5 hours of work per week
- an average of 30 problems per day for 3 days.

Complete problems 1-8 , 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19, 21, 22, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30 (21 problems)
Take Chapter 2 test according to the guidelines.
Lesson 3-1, page 108: problems 11-33 odd, 35-38, 41-45 (21 problems)
Lesson 3-2, page111: problems 11-17 odd, 23-31 odd, 33-42 all (19 problems)
Lesson 3-3, page 114-115: problems 9-29 odd, 33-39 odd (15 problems)

Testing:

Tests will be taken at home under a parent's supervision and returned
in a signed, sealed envelope.
A midterm exam will be given in class on the last two days of the first quarter.
A final exam will be given on the final exam day at the end of the second quarter.
Both exams are cumulative exams.

Grading:

50% tests
40% homework
10% mid-term and final exam
Tutor grades all work, but students and parents
check homework answers in the back of the book.

Specific Requirements:

Internet access is required for this course.
Problems need to be solved on notebook paper in a specific two-column format,
all work shown, answers circled, answers checked in the back of book,
and correct answers highlighted to facilitate easier grading.
Homework must be stapled together in the order assigned.
The textbook and workbook are required during class time.
A summer prerequisite skills assignment will need to be completed. (See below.)

(only used in a few specific instances in the second half of the course)

**Summer Assignment:

Prior to the first day of class, students will be asked to review the ten
prerequisite skill exercises on pages 554-563 in the textbook.
I will ask the parents to let me know which skill is the weakest for their child.

There will be a written assignment due the first day of class that consists of
approximately 20 problems of a pre-chapter assessment, along with some
notes and vocabulary work. This will be approximately 2 hours of work.
